A digital product is something you receive or access electronically rather than as a physical parcel. It might be a PDF crochet pattern, an editable invitation, a planner, an ebook or a website theme. The most useful question to ask before purchasing is not just What does it look like? but What exactly will I receive, and how will I use it?
A digital download is a file, archive or access link delivered electronically. Delivery may be offered on the order confirmation page, through an email receipt or via the checkout provider’s customer portal. It does not necessarily mean the seller sends an attachment directly to your inbox. Check the delivery instructions on the listing and at checkout.
A Portable Document Format (PDF) file keeps text and page layout relatively consistent across compatible readers. PDFs are common for crochet patterns, craft instructions, worksheets, guides, planners and printable stationery. A standard PDF is not necessarily editable: some include fillable fields, while others are intended only for reading or printing.
Before you buy a printable PDF, check the page size (A4, US Letter or another size), orientation, margins and whether the product includes different versions. Printing at “fit to page” can change dimensions, which matters for some templates and measurements.
A Canva template typically provides access to an editable design inside Canva. The purchase might include a PDF containing a template-access link rather than a ready-to-print design file. Once opened in a compatible Canva account, you may be able to change text, images, fonts and colors depending on the template setup.
Check whether the design uses Canva Free assets or any Canva Pro features. You should also confirm its dimensions, number of editable pages, supported exports and license terms. Buying a Canva template does not automatically grant permission to redistribute its editable source.
Ebooks can be supplied as PDF, EPUB or another supported reading format. A PDF preserves page design, while EPUB is often reflowable in compatible reading applications. A product may contain one format or several. Read the listing for file type, chapter coverage, language, illustrations and compatible apps; do not assume every ebook will work in every reader.
A ZIP archive packages one or more files together. It can be useful for digital bundles with multiple PDFs, templates or images. You may need to extract the archive before opening the contents. Most modern operating systems include built-in ZIP support, though specific devices may require a separate file manager.
Because a ZIP says nothing about what is inside it, the product description should still list the included files, file formats and software requirements.
A website theme or site template is not automatically a finished, hosted website. It may require WordPress, Shopify, a specific builder, plugins or a supported software version. The seller should clarify whether the download includes templates, theme files, demo content, documentation, updates or support. Hosting and domains are usually separate purchases unless explicitly included.
| Product type | What to verify |
|---|---|
| PDF pattern or guide | Page count, difficulty or topic, PDF reader, materials, included diagrams |
| Printable | Paper size, number of pages, fixed or fillable fields, printing requirements |
| Canva template | Editable elements, Free/Pro requirements, sizes, access link, license |
| Ebook | PDF/EPUB format, language, contents, reading device compatibility |
| Digital bundle | Exact included items, mixed file types, licenses and software requirements |
| Website theme | CMS/platform, builder version, installation, dependencies, update policy |
It generally means digital access is provided after a successful payment, not that a physical item will arrive later. Timing and access steps vary by merchant and checkout service. If you do not see your files, check the confirmation page, email receipt and spam folder. Verify the format before attempting to open a file; downloading an archive is not the same as extracting it.
A personal-use license may allow use for yourself, while some commercial licenses permit specified business purposes. Reselling an editable template, republishing a PDF or sharing a downloadable file generally requires separate permission. The right answer comes from the specific product’s license, not from the fact that it is a digital product.
